ISU senior beats mysterious illness
WEBVTT ELGIN: IT’S TIME FOR THE SUNDAY SPORTS EXTRA, AND IT IS EXTRA SPECIAL. MEREDITH BURKHALL HAS NOT MISSED A GAME IN HER ENTIRE CAREER, BUT RECEIVE THEIR — HER SENIOR SEASON WAS IN JEOPARDY WHEN SHE WOKE UP UNABLE TO WALK. AS NICK TABBERT EXPLAINS, SHE REFUSED TO BACK DOWN. KIND OF CRAZY WHAT I WENT THROUGH. NICK: IT WAS THE SCARIEST TWO WEEKS OF HER LIFE. KEPT THINKING ABOUT THE “WHAT IFS.” NICK: BURKHALL WOKE UP ONE MORNING WITH BLOOD CLOTS IN BOTH OF HER LEGS. SHE DID NOT GET MANY ANSWERS AS TO WHY THE CLOTS HAD FORMED. WE HAD HER TESTED FOR EVERYTHING. WE HAD ALL OF HER BLOOD WORK TESTED. EVERYTHING KEPT COMING BACK NORMAL. EVERYTHING KEPT COMING BACK INCONCLUSIVE. HER DOCTOR SAID SOMETIMES BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE, AND WE CAN’T EXPLAIN IT. NICK: BURKHALL WAS BACK ON HER FEET BY JUNE AND BACK IN THE GYM IN SHE WAS DETERMINED TO BE JULY. READY FOR THE SEASON. AUGUST 20, I WAS CLEARED TO GO OFF MEDICINE. NICK: BURKHALL HAS PLAYED IN EVERY GAME THIS SEASON FOR IOWA STATE. SHE HASN’T STARTED ALL OF THEM, BUT SHE IS THE FIRST OUT OF THE TUNNEL FOR WARMUPS AND IS AN INCREDIBLE LEADER. WHAT SHE BRINGS TO TEAM IS HARD TO PUT INTO WORDS BECAUSE SHE’S SO IMPACTFUL. WHETHER THAT IS ON THE SIDELINES CHEERING US ON, IN THE COURT KNOCKING DOWN HER 50 FOOT JUMPERS. SHE JUST LOVES BEING PART OF THE TEAM, LOVES BASKETBALL, LOVES IOWA STATE. WHEN I SAW HER IN THE HOSPITAL MAY 10 OR WHATEVER, I , DON’T KNOW IF WE EVER THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO PLAY AGAIN. SHE HANDLED IT GREAT, HASN’T MISSED A THING. NICK: IF YOU’RE WONDERING WHY THERE ARE NO PICTURES OF HER IN THE HOSPITAL OR ON THE COUCH RECOVERING, IT’S BECAUSE THOSE PICTURES DON’T EXIST. IT WAS AN INTENTIONAL. THEY WERE JUST NEVER TAKEN. BUT COME ON, WHAT ARE THE GRANDKIDS GOING TO LOOK AT? READ MY STORIES, I GUESS. WATCH THIS VIDEO NICK: WHAT THEY WILL SEE IS A FIGHTER AND A LEADER. NICK TABBERT, KCCI SUNDAY SPORTS WHAT A STORY.
