What happens to the $1 million Powerball prize that went unclaimed for a yr?

The Iowa Lottery is giving Iowans the prospect to win it once more, following a state regulation that mandates unclaimed lottery prizes must return into the prize pool, in accordance with a Monday lottery information launch.

Between Might 29 and June 18, Iowa Lottery gamers could have the prospect to enter right into a promotion referred to as “Woo Hoo a Million for You Giveaway,” during which each Powerball ticket purchased during that time is eligible for the sizable prize.

The profitable numbers for the prize might be drawn June 19.

Matt Strawn, CEO of Iowa Lottery, stated he believes this is the primary time in the 34-yr-lengthy history of the Iowa Lottery that a prize has gone unclaimed.

The unclaimed ticket, purchased at a Casey’s in Nevada in 2018, was never matched with its winner by its expiration date Thursday.

More than $4.3 billion in prizes has been awarded to Iowa Lottery players and more than $1.9 billion to state programs since the program’s inception in 1985, according to the news release.

Lottery proceeds primarily support the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund, the state’s general fund and the Vision Iowa Program, the lottery said in the statement.
