What a week. Ever since the ball dropped on New Year’s Eve, this city’s food reporters have been very, very busy breaking story after story—much of it bad.

In early January, the Mercury noted that both locations of the Original Taco House would be closing after half a century in business. The Oregonian followed that up with a story on multiple closures, dubbing Tuesday, January 2, as “Black Tuesday.” Highlights (lowlights) included Chinatown’s House of Louie, downtown’s Mandarin Cove, Pazzo, and Overlook’s Overlook Restaurant.

But it gets worse. Eater PDX has the news that Rue has closed after just 18 months in business, the special market Foster and Dobbs has called it quits, Milwaukie’s Amadeus Manner has closed its doors (maybe permanently) and, according to Willamette Week, the still fairly new vegan restaurant Harvest at The Bindery has permanently closed after the sudden death of owner and rock musician Jon Steuer on New Year’s Day. He was just 33 years old. And just today the Mercury‘s Dirk VanderHart reported that the late, great Boiler Room karaoke bar in Old Town is getting replaced by a (sigh) Starbucks.

That’s a lot of bad news, but there has been some good news in this so far grim young year.

Eater says that Sellwood’s getting a bagel shop—Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels, which will take up digs in the recently vacated Feastworks Delicatessen, which ALSO closed late last year—https://pdx.eater.com/2018/1/5/16855794/breadwinner-cycles-cafe-opening-portland-bike-coffee”North Williams Avenue got Breadwinner, a bike shop-coffee shop mashup, and Foster-Powell’s getting FOPO Food Carts, a 10,000-square-foot pod with a covered patio and space for up to 16 vendors, sometime this spring. WW reports that Le Pigeon and Little Bid’s Gabriel Rucker and Andy Fortgang are opening their third restaurant, Canard, which will soon serve French bar snacks, breakfast, lunch, and evening small plates right next door to Le Pigeon. They also had the news that that the wildly popular Trap Kitchen, with it’s Compton roots and celebrity following, has opened a brand new food cart in Gateway. Portland Monthly broke the news that Greg and Gabi Denton will re-open their old downtown SuperBite space with a reimagined concept—Bistro Agnes—on January 18 at 527 SW 12th Avenue. And lastly, the eagle-eyed Bridgetown Bites blog has what looks like the first word that Saima Thai and Sushi, which will serve, well, Thai food and sushi, will open in the old…
